Inside the Butterfly Net
Synopsis
World renowned geneticist Jessi Nagle (40’s) leaves her job at Darc Pharmaceuticals after a genetics experiment goes tragically wrong.
She moves her family to a new town, where her brother, Seth, is a lab manager at a prestigious medical teaching center. She gets a job in their genetics department.
When her teenage daughter, Allison, gets diagnosed with a terminal genetic disease, Jessi exhausts every lead she has. This quest eventually takes her to the Florida Everglades and to a butterfly used in Seminole healing ceremonies.
Upon testing, she discovers the butterfly contains a DNA sequence that has the potential to heal Allison, as well as countless others with autoimmune disorders. It also has the potential to kill her.
Jessi’s marriage struggles under the weight of their daughter’s decline. She and her husband have conflicting fears and limitations. Allison’s aunt tries to heal her with holistic therapy, which works in some ways, but not others.
Jessi develops her research as fast as she can while hiding from her old company, also desperate to get their hands on what she has. Meanwhile, Allison just wants to live a normal teenage life where she isn’t experimented on.
Ultimately, a story about trust, Jessi, Allison, and her entire family come together and make a choice that affects the future of genetic engineering.
